Prof. William Dalton, Ph.D.The safe use of clove oil strictly requires proper adherence to dilution protocols and knowledge of health contraindications. This powerful essential oil can cause extreme reactions if misused. It is necessary to follow dilution protocols based on the method of application properly. It is also necessary to know the utmost contraindications, such as pregnancy and drug interactions, so that adverse reactions do not occur.
Dilution Standards
- Normal skin: Maximum 2.5% concentration (15 drops per ounce carrier oil)
- Facial use: Extra dilution at 0.5% (3 drops per ounce)
- Internal use: 2 drops maximum in 8oz liquid
Absolute Contraindications
- Pregnancy/nursing: Complete avoidance required
- Children: Unsafe under age 2; diluted use only after 12
- Medications: Avoid with blood thinners, SSRIs, diabetes drugs
Allergy Testing
- Apply diluted oil to inner elbow area
- Wait 24 hours observing for reactions
- Discontinue immediately if redness/swelling occurs
Drug interactions can be serious. Clove oil can increase the effect of blood thinners, which poses a risk of bleeding. It lowers the impact of the medication for diabetes. The SSRIs may cause serotonin syndrome when taken with it. Consult with the physician and pharmacist about the use of supplements before instituting any new treatment.
Immediate action is required for exposure situations. Emergency: Flush eyes with water for 15 minutes if oil interferes. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and cold water if it comes in contact. If swallowed, drink milk and call poison control immediately. Keep oils properly labeled and out of the reach of children.
Storage impacts both safety and potency. Use dark glass bottles kept away from heat and light. Discard mixtures after two weeks, as potency decreases. Never move to unmarked containers. I keep mine in locked cabinets after an incident with a client's toddler.
Sensitivity variations require special approaches. Eczema or Rosacea sufferers usually are more reactive. Initially, a one-half strength dilution should be used for all tests. The use of less than one-half strength is recommended in elderly subjects due to skin thinning. These subjects should be carefully watched in all of their initial applications.
