Prof. William Dalton, Ph.D.Nonetheless, flax seeds confer significant health benefits, but being aware of their possible drawbacks can help promote wise and effective use. Certain preparation methods and health conditions pose a potential threat that necessitates extreme caution. Whole flax seeds can create gastrointestinal challenges, while phytoestrogens can disrupt hormonal balance. Flax seeds are highly perishable when not properly stored (i.e., exposed to elements of rancidity). My clients have benefited from my support on this through these recommendations.
Digestive Obstruction Risks
- Whole seeds cause intestinal blockages in diverticulitis patients
- Require grinding to prevent undigested passage through the gut
- Soak ground seeds to activate mucilage and prevent dehydration
Hormonal Interactions
- Phytoestrogens may stimulate hormone-sensitive cancer cells
- Require medical consultation for breast or ovarian cancer history
- Monitor menstrual cycle changes when introducing flax
Medication Interference
- Blood-thinning effects potentiate anticoagulant medications
- Thyroid medication absorption decreases with concurrent use
- Separate flax consumption from medications by 4 hours
Oxidation and Rancidity
- Ground flax loses nutritional value within 3 months
- Omega-3 fatty acids degrade creating harmful free radicals
- Refrigerate in opaque airtight containers to preserve freshness
Cyanide Exposure
- Trace amygdalin converts to cyanide above 50g daily
- Limit intake to maximum 7 tablespoons per day
- Symptoms include dizziness and rapid breathing
Control digestive discomfort by slow introduction and hydration. Start with 1 teaspoon and increase by 1 teaspoon weekly. Always consume 8oz of water for every tablespoon. Soak ground flax for 15 min before ingestion. Use with probiotic foods to decrease gas. Do not take before sleep to avoid dehydration overnight.
Avoid nutrient degradation by selecting proper storage methods. Grind small quantities per week, not monthly portions, and store them in dark glass jars in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Check the smell for bitterness, which may indicate rancidity. If you know you won't use the ground flaxseed, freeze the leftovers for healthy long-term storage. Discard after 3 months.
Special groups need individualized considerations. Pregnant women need to discuss with their OB before use. Thyroid patients need to monitor TSH at least monthly while on flax. Children younger than 12 should avoid therapeutic doses completely. Anyone with chronic conditions using flax therapeutically should have medical supervision.
