Prof. Graham Pierce, Ph.D.Geranium oil is very effective and safe for cleaning in your house because of its powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties. When diluted properly, it will kill common pathogens without the use of toxic chemicals. I have replaced several commercial cleaners in my home with geranium-based formulas, and they clean just as well, leaving all surfaces sparkling without any harsh fumes to irritate humans or animals.
Surface-Safe Formulas
- Countertops: 10 drops oil per cup vinegar/water solution
- Glass: 5 drops oil with 1 cup rubbing alcohol
- Stainless steel: 8 drops oil with 1/2 cup olive oil
- Flooring: 15 drops oil per gallon warm water
Precautions & Restrictions
- Avoid: Natural stone surfaces like marble
- Never use: On untreated wood finishes
- Pet safety: Keep animals away during application
- Ventilation: Ensure airflow during use
Antibacterial Effectiveness
- E. coli elimination: Kills within 5 minutes contact
- Mold prevention: Inhibits growth on damp surfaces
- Viral protection: Reduces surface transmission risk
- Odor neutralization: Eliminates organic smells
Mix all-purpose cleaners by combining 10 drops of geranium oil with distilled water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Store spray bottles labeled and remember to shake before use. My formulas are effective for two months. Replace chemical cleaners in your home, starting with kitchen countertops.
Ensure *pet safety* by removing animals from the area to be treated because they can be poisoned. Cats should be kept away from areas treated because of the risk of poisoning. Ensure that cleaning is done thoroughly before allowing pets back into those areas. I clean surfaces while pets are outside and aerate those areas before they return.
To effectively store cleaning solutions, use dark glass bottles. Light exposure diminishes effectiveness. Adding unused vitamin E oil to each cleaning solution prolongs the shelf life. It's also advisable to label each bottle with the ingredients and creation date. This system serves two purposes: eliminating the possibility of confusion and preserving potency.
