Prof. Graham Pierce, Ph.D.When you put cinnamon oil directly on your skin without taking the right precautions, you can get severe chemical burns. This oil is a highly potent essential oil and requires respect due to its high concentration of cinnamaldehyde. I am speaking from personal experience, learned the hard way many years ago. Do not underestimate its power if you intend to use it topically safely.
Dilution Protocol
- Mix one drop cinnamon oil per tablespoon of carrier oil
- Jojoba or almond oil provide ideal neutral bases for blending
- Never exceed 1% concentration for full-body applications
Patch Testing
- Apply diluted mixture to inner elbow or forearm area
- Wait twenty four hours before proceeding with full application
- Discontinue immediately if redness or stinging develops
Emergency Response
- Wash affected areas immediately with cold water and mild soap
- Apply cool compresses for fifteen minutes to reduce inflammation
- Seek medical help for severe reactions like blistering
Diverse areas of the skin demand special safety considerations. The thicker skin of the extremities can tolerate more diluted cinnamon oil than the skin of the face. Risk the mucous membranes not at all, because they are exceedingly sensitive. I reserve the face for such highly diluted serums as I would wish to use myself. The strength of dilution that is safe for your skin will depend on the type of your skin.
Special populations need more precautions. Children under twelve years old should be completely kept away from topical cinnamon oil. Pregnant women are at an increased risk of additional absorption. Individuals with skin sensitivity disorders, such as eczema, are advised to consult a medical professional. Securely safeguard the oils to prevent accidental eruption.
Correct oil storage maintains quality and safety. Use dark-colored bottles and store them at a temperature below 77 degrees F. Do not store oils in clear glass or any plastic, as they will deteriorate. Label bottles clearly regarding dilutions to avoid doubtful use. Proper labeling maintains the efficacy of products.
