Managing sentimental objects requires a balance between the emotional ties we have to things and the limited space in which to store them. These kinds of objects contain meaningful memories, which makes it a very personal experience to decide what to keep or not. I use respectful techniques to guide my clients through this process. Acknowledging the importance of these objects while minimizing overwhelm from too many preserved items in the home.

Digital Preservation

  • Photograph meaningful objects before donating
  • Create digital memory albums
  • Back up files using cloud services

Physical Curation

  • Limit keepsakes to one archival box
  • Use acid-free materials for preservation
  • Label items with memory details

Selective Display

  • Choose only emotionally significant items
  • Rotate displayed pieces seasonally
  • Use protective cases for delicate objects

The one curated box rule establishes boundaries. Each family member may have only one archival container for physical mementos. This gives a tangible structure to emotional connections. I use acid-free boxes, 12?x12?x10? For mementos for the best preservation.

Snapping photos of items before donating them stores memories without physical storage. Photograph the articles in natural light, noting the particulars in a handwritten account of their significance. Make digital albums grouped according to people or time periods. This gives their emotional value its rightful esteem while giving freedom from physical possession.

Making decisions about display needs to be intentional. Only the items on display that elicit a joyful response and or connection should be shown. Displayed items should be on a rotating quarter plan to maintain the significance. For collections acquired through inheritance, representative pieces should be chosen instead of the whole collection. Quality is more important than quantity.

Children's artistic creations pose distinct challenges. First, photograph creations right after they are completed. Then, once a month, have kids select one for a physical portfolio to keep. When choosing, it is best to involve them, because it teaches kids to value their work while learning makes it easy for them to build fewer products.
