Prof. William Dalton, Ph.D.Rose oil should never be applied directly to the skin, as it is one of the most irritating and sensitizing essential oils available. This concentrated essential oil must be properly diluted for topical use. I have treated clients who have developed rash lesions from the use of undiluted rose oil on the face. Always recognize the potency of rose oil and use it properly.
Facial Applications
- Mix 1-2 drops rose oil per teaspoon carrier oil
- Jojoba or rosehip seed oils work best for faces
- Apply after cleansing during nighttime routines
- Avoid eye area and mucous membranes completely
Body Treatments
- Blend 3-5 drops per tablespoon base oil
- Coconut or almond oil provide effective carriers
- Massage into skin after showering
- Focus on pulse points for aromatic benefits
Spot Treatments
- Maximum 1% concentration for targeted use
- Dilute single drop in teaspoon carrier oil
- Apply directly to blemishes using cotton swab
- Limit application to twice daily maximum
Correct dilution methods retain the properties of rose oil and minimize responding. Measure precisely using calibrated droppers. Combine oils in glass containers, instead of plastic. Stir carefully, preserving the molecular qualities. Store the mixtures in dark bottles that are kept away from heat sources.
Before applying the regular treatment, perform a patch test. Using a diluted formula, apply to the inner elbow. Dress with an adhesive strip for 24 hours. Observe for any signs of redness or itching. All new clients should adhere to this procedure. Prevention is more important than cure.
Be cognizant of safety recommendations for vulnerable groups. Rose oil is not recommended for use by pregnant women in the first trimester. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Please do not use it on or around the eyes or nasal passages. Visit a dermatologist before using rose oil if you have any existing skin conditions.
Carrier oils improve therapeutic benefits while shielding the skin. They help the skin absorb the oil without irritation. Cold-pressed and unrefined oils offer the most synergistic effect. Your skin is fed, and you receive the benefits of rose oil.
