Using geranium oil on your face is safe when properly diluted and applied. This highly beneficial essential oil helps balance sebum production, reduces acne, and increases skin elasticity. It is one that I have used for years, and I have not experienced any irritation, instead enjoying clear skin, when using the precise protocols for dilution.

Dilution Ratios

  • 1% concentration: 1 drop oil per 5ml carrier oil
  • Carrier options: Jojoba for oily skin almond for dry
  • Patch test: Apply to inner elbow for 24 hours
  • Avoid: Undiluted application causes irritation

Application Areas

  • Safe zones: Cheeks forehead and jawline
  • Avoid: Eye contour and mucous membranes
  • Technique: Gentle upward massage motions
  • Frequency: Once daily for new users

Skin Type Solutions

  • Oily skin: Controls shine without overdrying
  • Dry skin: Boosts hydration with fatty acids
  • Combination: Balances T-zone and cheeks
  • Sensitive: Start with 0.5% concentration

To check for sensitivity, conduct a patch test before using it on the entire face. The diluted oil must be applied to the inner elbow and covered with a bandage. After 24 hours, check for redness or itching. This precaution will prevent any reaction, especially on sensitive skin, that I have learned about. This precaution should never be omitted.

After washing your skin, add geranium oil to your nighttime regimen. Use upward movements to spread the serum evenly across the skin. If you apply it in the morning, be sure to wear SPF sunscreen, as some individuals may experience photosensitivity. Store the formulations in amber bottles to maximize the effectiveness of the preservatives for up to three months.

If irritation develops in or around the eyes or on broken skin, discontinue use. See a dermatologist for persistent reactions. If you have rosacea, start with a 0.25% concentration. Clients with sensitive skin have tolerated it well when I have used carriers with chamomile.
