Prof. William Dalton, Ph.D.Clove oil has important benefits for the skin because of its antimicrobial and antioxidant constituents. Eugenol, the active ingredient found in clove oil, works on bacteria that cause acne while also neutralizing free radicals that result in premature aging. Be sure to dilute it properly to avoid irritation. The facial concentration should not exceed 0.5%. Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin first to ensure it is safe.
Acne Treatment
- Eugenol kills Propionibacterium acnes bacteria
- Reduces inflammation in active breakouts
- Apply as spot treatment with 1% dilution
Anti-Aging Effects
- Antioxidants combat collagen degradation
- Diminishes fine lines with regular use
- Use in night serums at 0.3% concentration
Hyperpigmentation
- Inhibits melanin overproduction
- Fades sun spots over 6-8 weeks
- Combine with rosehip oil for enhanced results
Dilution protocols are designed to prevent adverse effects. However, due to facial applications, more care is required than usual. No application should be made at a concentration exceeding 0.5% (3 drops to 1 ounce of carrier oil). Body treatments may have a maximum strength of 1-2%. In preparing acne masks, aloe vera gel can be used. Always, however, take a patch test in the crease behind your ear.
A client suffering from persistent adult acne achieved marked improvement within weeks. She used a nightly mixture containing 0.5% clove oil and aloe. Inflammation decreased 60%, without excessive dryness. This is an example where proper usage gives results. Should not be used with retinoids, however, as it may cause some irritation.
Contraindicated in rosacea-sensitive skin and eczema; discontinue if stinging or redness occurs. Do not apply before sun exposure, as it may cause photosensitivity. All topical applications are contraindicated in pregnancy. Consult a dermatologist before using it for chronic skin disease.
Storage influences potency; store clove oil in dark glass bottles away from the heat. After two weeks, toss your mixtures. Why? Because fresh preparations retain their maximum antibacterial strength for a short time. If you store properly, you'll get the maximum benefits from your clove oil on your skin, never losing potency.
